How the date is set
The first Sunday of Advent is the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day. Its date falls between November 27 and December 3 in the Western church calendar.
These dates follow the Western Gregorian calendar. Eastern Orthodox churches can observe Easter and related days on different dates. Confirm your own church's calendar before announcing a service.
Planning the service
Set the four Sunday readings with the pastor before assigning readers. If the church uses a wreath, confirm who brings it, who lights each candle and where the reading belongs in the service. Give households their instructions early, and check the following Sundays against Christmas Eve and Christmas Day plans.
A Scripture passage to discuss with the service leader is Isaiah 9:2-7. Choose the final readings according to your church's practice.
Browse Advent hymns and confirm the tune and verses with the musicians.
