Find a hymn by humming

Hum or sing the first line of a hymn, in any key. Your browser follows the tune and shows which of 50 hymn tunes it matches. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

This free tool is made by Church Posting.

Press the button, allow the microphone, and hum the first line. Ten seconds is plenty.

No microphone? Tap the tune instead

Tap the first eight or more notes. Any key works; only the ups and downs count.

How it works, and what beta means here

The page measures the pitch of your voice many times a second, turns steady stretches into notes, and keeps only how far each note rises or falls from the one before. That shape is compared with the opening notes of every tune in the library's public domain scores, allowing for a held note, a skipped note or a wrong one. The key you hum in does not matter.

It is a beta because a hum is hard to hear. A quiet room, a clear "la" or "doo" on each note, and the first line of the tune give the best result. It knows 50 tunes today, the ones with public domain sheet music on this site, and more arrive as scores are added. Once the page has loaded it works with no signal.
