How the date is set
Christmas Day falls on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar. Christmas Eve is December 24. A church can hold services on either or both days, so confirm the local schedule.
These dates follow the Western Gregorian calendar. Eastern Orthodox churches can observe Easter and related days on different dates. Confirm your own church's calendar before announcing a service.
Planning the service
Agree on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day service times before inviting people. Confirm readers, musicians, ushers and children's arrangements for each gathering separately. Ask the accompanist which carol tunes and verses the church uses, and check the printed order against the slides. Explain any candle lighting instructions before the service begins.
A Scripture passage to discuss with the service leader is Luke 2:1-20. Choose the final readings according to your church's practice.
Browse Christmas hymns and confirm the tune and verses with the musicians.
