The story behind Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)

Joel Houston, Matt Crocker and Salomon Ligthelm wrote Oceans for Hillsong United's third studio album, Zion. According to Wikipedia, Crocker and Ligthelm began the words in Australia, Ligthelm set the theme of stepping into the unknown, and most of the melody took shape over about ten days in Houston's apartment in New York. The final words were finished at a waterfall on the last day of recording. The song retells Peter walking on the water in Matthew 14. Taya Smith, then a newer member of the band, sang the lead, and Songfacts says she recorded it in one take. The album came out in February 2013, and Sparrow sent the song to US Christian radio that August as its second single. Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart held it at number one for a record 61 weeks in total. It won Song of the Year at the 2014 Dove Awards, and the RIAA certified it four times platinum.
