The story behind Reckless Love
Cory Asbury, Caleb Culver and Ran Jackson wrote Reckless Love, and Bethel Music released it on October 27, 2017, as the lead single from Asbury's album of the same name. A video of Steffany Gretzinger leading the song at Bethel Church in Redding, California, circulated early in 2017 and drew millions of views. Asbury told CBN that two experiences as a father shaped it. Holding his son for the first time changed how he understood God, and his daughter's serious health problems led him to hard questions about God's character. At the 2017 Heaven Come Conference he tied the song to the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15. Wikipedia reports that he described the word reckless as a love that disregards its own cost, and that critics including Mike Winger questioned the word while John Piper defended a sense of it. The song reached number one on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart in March 2018, won Song of the Year at the 2018 Dove Awards, and earned a Grammy nomination.
