The story behind The Blessing
Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, Steven Furtick and Chris Brown wrote The Blessing in late February 2020. Chris Brown told The Christian Beat the four had planned to work on another song. Furtick began singing the benediction from Numbers 6, the team shifted focus, and the song came together in a few hours. They sang it at Elevation Church two days later. Christianity Today reports that Elevation Worship introduced it on March 1, 2020, near Charlotte, North Carolina, and released the live video on March 6, shortly before the pandemic closed most US churches. Pittsburgh pastors Alan Hannah and Jason Howard then organized a virtual choir from nearly 30 churches, released on Easter Sunday. Tim and Rachel Hughes of Gas Street Church in Birmingham, England, followed with a UK choir of 65 churches that premiered on May 3, 2020. Christianity Today counted more than 100 virtual choirs in dozens of countries, and the song reached number two on the CCLI list of most-used songs.
