The story behind This Is Amazing Grace
Phil Wickham and Josh Farro wrote the first version of This Is Amazing Grace while the two friends talked about God's grace. Wikipedia says Farro was still with the band Paramore and that they wrote it in about 20 minutes. CCM Magazine says they began it years before it was recorded and made a rough demo with a computer and acoustic guitars.
The demo circulated for several years until it reached Jeremy Riddle of Bethel Church in Redding, California. Riddle saw potential in it and asked to rewrite some of the verses. Wickham had nearly forgotten the song and told him to do as he liked. Riddle recorded it first, on the Bethel live album For the Sake of the World. Wickham later made his own version for the album The Ascension, which Fair Trade Services released on August 6, 2013, with a more upbeat arrangement.
The song spread widely in 2014, when CCM Magazine says it became the most played song on Christian radio. Billboard named it the top Christian Airplay song of 2014. The RIAA certified it gold in 2015 and platinum in July 2018. Wikipedia says the lyrics rest on 2 Corinthians 6:18 and Revelation 5:11 to 13, and that the song also takes inspiration from John Newton's hymn Amazing Grace.
