The story behind Way Maker
Sinach, the stage name of Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, wrote Way Maker in 2015. She is from Lagos, Nigeria, where she leads worship at Christ Embassy, a large Pentecostal church. Her original music video came out that year, and Songfacts says it passed 100 million views in March 2019. Christianity Today quotes her saying that a song is not about the writer and can go ahead of the writer.
Other artists carried the song into American churches. Integrity Music licensed it for two British worship compilations in 2018 and 2019 and formed a partnership with Sinach in July 2019. Michael W. Smith recorded a live version in August 2018 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Sources disagree on his studio release. Christianity Today dates his single to February 2019, and Songfacts says he recorded the duet with Vanessa Campagna in late 2019. Leeland and Smith both had versions in the Billboard Hot Christian Songs top ten in April 2020.
The song topped the CCLI Top 100 list of songs sung in churches and has been translated into 50 languages. Christianity Today notes that it never names the Trinity, which helps explain why it is sung in both Trinitarian and Oneness Pentecostal churches. Hymnary.org lists its subjects as destiny, healing, life, light, miracles, promise, restoration and worship.
