The story behind What a Beautiful Name
Ben Fielding and Brooke Ligertwood wrote What a Beautiful Name for Hillsong Worship. Wikipedia says they composed it in December 2015 in Sydney for the Hillsong Conference, while another account says the work ran over several months. Fielding has said the text draws on Hebrews 1 and Colossians 1, and GodTube lists John 1 as the source of the opening picture of Jesus as the Word. Hillsong recorded it live at the 2016 conference for the album Let There Be Light, which came out October 14, 2016, and released the video on September 30. The single followed on January 6, 2017. It held number one on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart for 37 weeks, won Song of the Year at the 2017 Dove Awards, and won the 2018 Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song, Hillsong Worship's first. Wikipedia reports that John Piper and Sam Storms questioned one line about God's need for people, and that Fielding defended it.
