Presbyterian churches in California

Presbyterian beliefs and church practice

The Orthodox Presbyterian Church publishes the Westminster Confession as part of its standards. Its chapters on the church, sacraments and church government help explain that body's teaching. This directory groups several Presbyterian bodies together. Confirm the exact denomination and the version of the standards a congregation has adopted.

Read the congregation's own statement

The label helps you find churches to contact. A church's published confession and the answers its leaders give explain what members are taught. Open the church's website from its listing, look for its beliefs or membership page, and bring any unanswered questions to the church office.

Prepare for a Sunday visit

Confirm the current service time and meeting address with the church before traveling. Ask whether children stay in worship, where an accessible entrance is, and whether the church publishes an order of service. Tell the office about an access need privately so someone can meet you at the right entrance.

Before taking communion or applying for membership, read the church's stated requirements. Ask who can answer doctrinal questions and what preparation the church asks of prospective members. Keep the local church's own words with your notes so two congregations with the same label remain distinguishable.
