A candidate for a church job should ask about pay, the supervisor, the hours and how staff are reviewed, and a search committee should ask every candidate the same written questions in the same order and score each answer on its own. Only 13 percent of the 379 church postings we read on October 19, 2026 stated pay, so an interview often supplies the first answers to those questions.

The questions below help a candidate and a committee prepare. The aggregate figures come from church postings read October 19, 2026. Other sources include the 2023 Youth Pastor Compensation Report, the 2025 PAM Salary Survey, and federal guidance from the EEOC and the Federal Trade Commission.

What do church postings leave out?

Each gap in a posting is a question for the interview.

What the posting often leaves outHow commonQuestion to ask
Pay48 of 379 postings stated usable pay (October 19, 2026)What is the pay range for this position, and how was it set?
Hours121 of 379 did not say full time or part time (October 19, 2026)How many hours a week does the job need, and which days and evenings?

What should a candidate research before the interview?

Read the church’s statement of faith, its public bylaws and the full posting. Ask about attendance, staff count and budget when the church has not supplied those facts.

Look up the church’s denomination, the pastor and the staff page, and read recent sermons. Write down three questions that the research raised.

What questions should a candidate ask a church?

Ask them in the first interview, in this order, so the answers shape the rest.

TopicQuestionWhy it matters
RoleWhat will this person do in the first 90 days, and what does a good first year look like?A posting lists duties without ranking them
RoleWhy is the position open, and what happened to the last person in it?The answer shows turnover and expectations
PayWhat is the range, and is housing inside it?A salary with housing inside it differs from cash salary plus a parsonage
ReviewHow and when is my pay reviewed? In the youth pastor survey, 53 percent had no annual review, and those who did earned 7.5 percent more
Other workMay I hold another job, and are there hours I cannot use for it?In the PAM survey 61 percent of church musicians held other employment
TeamWho are the staff, who are the volunteers, and who recruits them? You need to know which people you will lead

DecisionsWho makes the final call on staffing and programs? It shows how authority is shared among pastor, elders and congregation
ConflictHow does the church handle disagreement between staff and leaders? It describes the culture you will work in
FaithMay I read the statement of faith and the bylaws before I accept? You need to understand the church’s religious requirements
SafetyWhat are the background-check and child-protection rules for staff and volunteers? These rules apply to you and to the people you will recruit

How should a candidate ask about pay?

Ask early, ask for the range and ask in writing. If a church cannot state a range, it has more to decide before it can hire. The church staff salaries guide shows what other churches state and gives BLS medians by state and role to compare.

What questions should a search committee ask?

Ask every candidate the same questions in the same order, and write the answers down. The table groups questions by what they test.

What are good pastor interview questions?

Ask a pastor candidate to explain teaching, care, staff leadership and finances. Agree on the interview stages and any work samples before the process begins.

  1. Preach from a passage we give you, and tell us what you changed for this congregation.
  2. Describe how you prepare a sermon from the first reading to the last edit.
  3. Tell us about your pastoral care in the past year, with details changed to protect people.
  4. Describe how you work with elders or a church council and how you handle disagreement with them.
  5. How have you led staff, and how did you handle a staff member who was failing?
  6. How do you handle church finances, and who looks over your shoulder?
  7. What do you know about our church, and what questions has our statement of faith raised for you?
  8. What would your family want us to know about life in this role?
  9. What is your plan for the first year?
  10. What do you want us to ask you that we have not?

What are good youth pastor interview questions?

Use youth pastor questions to examine work with teenagers, parents and adult volunteers.

  1. Describe the largest group of students you have led and what you did in the first month.
  2. How have you recruited and trained adult volunteers, and how many?
  3. How do you communicate with parents, and what do you do when a parent is upset?
  4. Walk us through your safety practices for a trip with an overnight stay.
  5. How do you handle a student who shares something serious in a private conversation?
  6. Teach us a 10-minute lesson for a mixed group of middle and high school students.
  7. How do you decide what to cut when the calendar is full?

What are good worship leader interview questions?

Ask a worship candidate to demonstrate preparation, musical leadership and work with a team.

  1. Lead us in two songs, one you chose and one we chose.
  2. How do you choose songs for a congregation that sings in several styles?
  3. Walk us through a rehearsal, from the first note to the last prayer.
  4. How have you recruited, auditioned and developed volunteer musicians?
  5. How do you work with a pastor who disagrees with a song choice?
  6. What software have you used for charts, schedules and slides?
  7. How do you handle a sound problem in the middle of a service?

What are good children’s ministry director interview questions?

These questions focus on safety and volunteers.

  1. Describe the screening, training and supervision you set up for children’s volunteers.
  2. What is your check-in and check-out process, and what happened the last time it failed?
  3. What do you do when a child’s behavior disrupts a class?
  4. How do you recruit and keep volunteers for a nursery?
  5. What curriculum have you used, and how did you decide?
  6. What are your reporting duties in this state if you suspect abuse?
  7. How do you communicate with parents about incidents?

What are good church administrator and technical director interview questions?

Technical directorWhat do you do when the stream drops during the sermon?
Technical directorDescribe the volunteer team you recruited and how you trained it.
Technical directorHow do you measure sound levels and protect the hearing of the crew?

What should a committee ask a reference?

References answer what the candidate cannot say about themselves. Use the same questions for every reference.

  1. How long did you work with this person, and in what role?
  2. What did they do best?
  3. Describe how they handled a conflict or a failure.
  4. How did they work with volunteers, parents and staff?
  5. Would you hire this person again, and why?
  6. Is there anything that would give you pause about this person working with children or handling money?

What answers should make a committee ask more?

Some answers call for a follow-up. If a candidate cannot name a volunteer they recruited, a budget they kept or a team they led, the committee has little evidence of leadership. When every earlier church is described as the problem, ask for a reference from a former supervisor. A general statement about child protection should draw a request for the steps. A candidate who declines to read the statement of faith before the interview has told the committee something about fit.

How should a committee run the process?

Five rules keep the process fair and the notes usable.

  1. Write the questions before the first interview and use them with every candidate.
  2. Score each answer on a 1 to 5 scale the same day, before the group discusses it.
  3. Check references and, with written permission, background records. The Federal Trade Commission says an employer using a background check company must give the applicant a written disclosure “in a stand-alone format,” get written permission, and give a notice before it takes an adverse action.
  4. Put the pay range and the housing allowance in writing before the offer.
  5. Tell candidates the stages and the date of the decision.

What can a church ask about faith?

The EEOC compliance manual says a religious organization may “prefer to employ individuals who share their religion,” and says the exemption “is not limited to jobs involved in the specifically religious activities of the organization.” A committee can ask a candidate to read and respond to the statement of faith. A church’s attorney should review questions about family, health and age before the first interview.

The church job description guide shows how to put these requirements in the posting, and the job search guide covers where candidates look. A church can post a job free, and the weekly newsletter sends new guides and job data.
