Worship leaders in our October 2026 postings are offered $50,750 to $85,000 a year, with a median of $67,750 across the six full-time postings that state annual pay, and one part-time worship director is offered $40 an hour. The most common full-time salary range in the 2025 Presbyterian Association of Musicians survey of 467 church musicians was $55,000 to $70,000, and the most common part-time range was under $15,000.
The posting figures come from 57 worship and music church postings read October 19, 2026. The comparisons come from the PAM Salary Survey Report from PC(USA) Research Services and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, and BLS wage data. The job pages show current openings.
How much do worship leaders make?
Six of the 57 worship postings state an annual salary. All six are full time. Where a church posted a range, the table shows both ends and the midpoint.
| Title | Church | State | Posted pay | Midpoint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Director of Worship & Arts | Treeline Church | MI | $80,000 to $90,000 | $85,000 |
| Worship Leader | Westview Baptist Church | WV | $75,000 | $75,000 |
| Worship Pastor, Prescott Valley Campus | QuadCity Christian Church | AZ | $65,000 to $80,000 | $72,500 |
| Worship & Creative Arts Director | Connections Christian Church | CO | $58,000 to $68,000 | $63,000 |
| Worship Ministry Director | New Heights Community Church | AR | $50,000 to $75,000 | $62,500 |
| Campus Worship Pastor | Christ Community Church | IL | $45,750 to $55,750 | $50,750 |
The median midpoint is $67,750. The one hourly posting lists $40 an hour. Fifty of the 57 postings state no pay, and none of the 8 worship postings at Gateway Church does.
BLS does not list worship leaders, and its closest occupation is music directors and composers. The May 2025 national median for that occupation is $73,710, with a 10th percentile of $39,880 and a 90th percentile of $165,760. BLS counted 12,540 workers.
How does the hourly offer compare with the salaries?
Compare an hourly offer with the hours the church expects. Ask whether rehearsals, Sunday services, preparation and special services all count as paid work. BLS reports a mean hourly wage of $43.50 for music directors and composers across all employers.
What do church musicians earn in the PAM survey?
The Presbyterian Association of Musicians survey is the most detailed public source on church music pay we found. PC(USA) Research Services and PAM ran it from November 2024 through March 2025 and published it in May 2025. Of the 467 respondents, 83 percent served mainline Protestant churches and 47 percent served Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregations, so it describes mainline church music more than it describes contemporary worship teams.
| Finding | Result |
|---|---|
| Respondents | 467 |
| Full time and part time | 28 percent full time, 72 percent part time |
| Most common full-time salary range | $55,000 to $70,000 (29 percent), then $70,000 to $85,000 (25 percent) |
| Full-time pay above $86,000 | About a quarter of full-time respondents |
| Full-time pay below $55,000 | About a fifth of full-time respondents |
| Most common part-time salary range | Under $15,000 (38 percent), then $15,000 to $25,000 (31 percent) |
| Median weekly hours | 40 for a full-time director or minister of music, 12 across part-time roles |
| Have other employment | 61 percent, and 68 percent of part-time respondents |
| Hold a master’s degree or higher | 66 percent |
| Provide pastoral care | 35 percent |
The survey excluded roles with fewer than five responses, and that cut full-time worship leaders from its salary ranges. The survey’s role list shows why. Directors and ministers of music were 43 percent of respondents, organists who also direct were 19 percent, directors of worship were 10 percent and worship leaders were 1 percent.
Worship leader, worship pastor or music director?
Churches use all three titles for overlapping work, and the postings show how often. In our data, 57 postings carry a worship or music title.
| Word in the title | Postings |
|---|---|
| Worship pastor | 16 |
| Worship director | 13 |
| Worship leader | 12 |
| Music (music director, minister of music or director of music ministry) | 5 |
A worship pastor does the work of a worship leader and often carries pastoral duties and a seat on the staff team. A music director tends to oversee the choir, the instrumentalists and the music of the service, and PAM’s respondents are mostly in that group. In the postings, titles such as “Pastor/Director of Worship” at The Bible Chapel and “Associate Pastor of Worship and Discipleship” at River City Church sit between the two.
Do churches combine the job with another one?
Twelve of the 57 worship titles pair worship with another area. Ask the church to state the hours assigned to each ministry and who sets priorities when the schedules overlap.
How do multisite churches hire worship staff?
Some hire a worship leader for each campus. At least six of the 57 postings are campus roles, including three Gateway Church postings for the Frisco, Plano and North Richland Hills campuses, and a Campus Worship Leader at TwinRivers.Church. Gateway also lists five “NextGen Worship Lead (Support)” postings at individual campuses. A posting for a campus role should say whether the worship leader reports to a campus pastor or to a central worship director.
Is a worship leader a pastor?
It depends on the church. Thirty-five percent of PAM respondents provide pastoral care, and 16 of our 57 postings use “worship pastor.” Eligibility for a minister’s housing allowance turns on the IRS test in Publication 517, which asks whether the worker is “a duly ordained, commissioned, or licensed minister.” A worship leader who is not credentialed by the church should ask the church’s accountant before assuming the allowance applies.
Is a worship leader a full-time job?
In our postings, yes. Of the 57 worship postings, 37 are full time (65 percent), 10 are part time and 10 do not say. In the PAM survey, 72 percent of positions are part time, and 61 percent of respondents hold another job. The two samples count different churches. Our postings include several large churches, and in the PAM sample 40 percent of churches average 26 to 100 attendees.
Gateway Church accounts for 8 of the 57 worship postings and The Bible Chapel for 3. In all, the 57 postings come from 46 churches in 22 states.
What should a worship candidate ask about the work?
Ask who chooses songs, who leads rehearsals and who recruits and schedules musicians. Confirm which services the role covers and how the worship leader works with the pastor and production team.
What skills and tools should an application show?
Name the instruments you play, the groups you have led and the software you have used. Prepare a recording that the church has permission to view. Explain your part in the recording and how you prepared the musicians.
What does a typical week look like?
The PAM survey gives the best picture of the schedule. Respondents conduct one to two ensembles on average and lead 1.4 weekly services, and the median full-time week is 40 hours. Part-time respondents work a median of 12 hours. The survey found that 61 percent of its respondents hold a second job, with outside employment averaging 28 hours a week across all respondents, and 33 hours for those in part-time church jobs.
What benefits come with a church music job?
PAM reports benefits by hours. Full-time musicians average 20 paid vacation days and 11 paid sick days a year, and part-time musicians average 9 vacation days and 6 sick days. Respondents who receive paid holidays average seven a year. Most full-time respondents have some form of health insurance and a pension or retirement benefit from the church, and very few part-time respondents have either. A third of part-time respondents said they have no benefits at all. A church that cannot raise the salary can compare itself with these lines.
Do you need a degree to be a worship leader?
The church’s posting decides whether a degree is required or preferred. The PAM survey found that 66 percent of its respondents held a master’s degree or higher, and its respondents mainly served mainline churches. That figure describes the survey sample.
How do you apply for a worship leader job?
Follow the application instructions and confirm the church’s expectations before sending recordings. Prepare a record of the services and rehearsals you have led, the musicians you have trained and the tools you have used. Read the church’s statement of faith and ask how the church understands the role.
Where are worship jobs?
The 57 postings sit in 22 states. See the worship leader job pages, the worship pastor pages, the music director pages and the church musician pages, or browse every state. Texas has the most open church jobs, and the Texas page lists them.
Church Posting’s free tools help the person who runs the service. The hymn library has public domain hymn words to print or project, the church slides tool builds the slides, and the order of worship guide shows three service orders with times. Churches hiring a worship leader can use the church job description guide and post the job free. The weekly newsletter sends new guides and job data.
