Youth pastors in our October 2026 postings are offered $48,000 to $85,000 a year, with a median of $55,000 across the nine postings that state annual pay. The largest survey of youth workers, with 803 respondents, put the 2022 average full-time salary at $51,234 and named church attendance and budget as the two biggest factors behind pay.

The posting figures come from 49 youth ministry church postings read October 19, 2026. The salary comparisons come from the 2023 Youth Pastor Compensation Report from Chemistry Staffing, The Youth Cartel and ChurchSalary.com, and BLS wage data. These are dated samples, and the job pages show current openings.

How much do youth pastors make?

Nine of the 49 youth postings state an annual salary. Where a church posted a range, the table shows both ends and the midpoint.

The median midpoint is $55,000 and the mean is $58,889. All nine are full-time jobs. Three churches post one figure, which can be a floor. They are Orlando at $60,000, Knoxville at $50,000 and Village Meadows Baptist Church in Arizona at $48,000.

Two other benchmarks fit. The Youth Pastor Compensation Report found a 2022 average of $51,234 for full-time youth pastors, and its sample came from 686 full-time respondents. BLS reports a May 2025 median of $52,100 for directors of religious activities and education, its closest category to a youth director. The posted median sits above both, and nine postings are too few to say the market has moved.

Does church size change a youth pastor’s pay?

Yes. The survey names attendance and budget as the two biggest factors. The 93 churches in the survey with more than 1,000 people in weekly attendance paid their youth pastors an average of $60,060. The 591 churches with 1,000 or fewer paid $49,867, which is 17 percent less.

Pay also rises in steps inside the smaller group. This table shows the 490 churches under 500 in attendance that support a full-time youth pastor.

Weekly attendanceAverage full-time youth pastor salaryChurches
50 or fewer$37,25910
51 to 100$41,66152
101 to 150$45,41391
151 to 200$48,47796
201 to 250$46,45951
251 to 300$50,92469
301 to 400$55,83175
401 to 500$54,02946
All churches under 500$48,747490

Budget works the same way. Churches with a general budget under $1 million paid an average of $48,161, and churches at $1 million or more paid $58,233. The report’s advice for a youth pastor is to learn the church’s attendance and budget numbers first, because they predict the salary better than the size of the youth group does.

Our postings show the size effect from another angle. None of the nine churches that post youth pay is one of the multisite churches with five or more openings in our data, such as Gateway, Bayside and Elevation. Those churches did not post youth pay.

What else raises a youth pastor’s pay?

Education, years in ministry and an annual review all moved the average in the 2023 report.

FactorGroupAverage full-time salary
EducationMaster’s degree or higher$55,360
EducationNo master’s degree$48,571
Years of ministry, total1 to 5 years$44,600
Years of ministry, total6 to 10 years$49,246
Years of ministry, total11 to 15 years$55,069
Years of ministry, total16 or more years$60,528
Annual reviewHad one in the past year7.5 percent more than those who did not

Of the full-time respondents, 92.5 percent had finished a four-year college degree and 40 percent held a master’s degree or higher. More than half (53 percent) did not receive an annual review in the past year. The report calls the review the first step toward a raise.

The report also measured pay by gender. Among the 686 full-time respondents, 466 men averaged $54,441 and 218 women averaged $44,504, an 18.2 percent gap. The report says part of the gap tracks church size, because the women’s churches averaged 624 people and a $1,020,320 budget while the men’s averaged 687 people and $1,444,182. A candidate can ask for the church’s pay range early and ask how it was set.

Pay has also lagged prices. The report says average youth pastor salaries rose nearly 2 percent in 2022 and 1 percent the year before, while U.S. inflation was 7.1 percent for the 12 months ending November 2022. The same report found that the pay jump between the eleventh and twelfth year of ministry runs 5 to 10 percent, so staying in the role carries a premium.

New hires start lower. The 33 first-year full-time youth pastors in the survey averaged $36,299 for the 13 women and $38,894 for the 20 men. After two years of service the averages were $43,057 for women and $52,590 for men.

How should a church set a youth pastor’s pay?

A committee can work from four numbers in order, and each one is in this guide.

  1. Find the church’s weekly attendance in the attendance table and read the average for that row. A church of 151 to 200 starts near $48,477, and a church of 301 to 400 near $55,831.
  2. Move up for a master’s degree, which the report ties to about $6,800 more than the average without one, and for years in ministry, using the tenure table.
  3. Compare the figure with the nine posted salaries above and with the BLS clergy median for your state, which is $59,480 in Texas and $56,940 in Florida.
  4. Write down benefits and leave beside the cash. Only 28.4 percent of the survey’s youth pastors had paid maternity or paternity leave that did not use sick time or vacation.

Then put the range in the posting. Forty of the 49 youth postings give no pay, so the nine that do are the ones a candidate can compare.

Is a youth pastor a full-time job?

Usually. Of the 49 youth postings, 37 are full time, 5 are part time and 7 do not say. In the survey, 686 of the 803 respondents (85 percent) called themselves full time, and the report defines full time as regularly scheduled for 30 hours or more a week.

The five part-time postings are a student pastor in Alabama, a youth coordinator at RockHarbor Church, a youth worship coordinator at The Crossing, a student coordinator at Church of the Highlands and a youth pastor in Ohio.

What should a candidate clarify about the role?

Ask the church to define the age group, the weekly gatherings and the adults who share responsibility for students. Ask who recruits and screens volunteers, who speaks with parents, who approves trips and who manages the budget. Get the supervisor’s name and the expected evening and weekend schedule in writing.

Can you be a youth pastor without a degree?

Read the education line for each job. A church may describe a degree as required, preferred or replaceable by experience. The 2023 survey found that 7.5 percent of full-time youth pastors had not finished a four-year degree. That survey result does not establish what a particular church will accept.

How do you become a youth pastor?

Build a record of work with students and adult volunteers. Keep examples of lessons taught, events planned, parents contacted and volunteers trained. Ask a supervisor for a reference and follow the church’s screening and child-protection requirements before serving with students.

What do churches call the job?

The same work is posted under many names. Of the 49 youth postings, 27 use “youth” in the title, 17 use “student” without “youth,” and 5 use “middle school” or “high school” alone. A title can hold more than one word from the next table.

A search for “youth pastor jobs” alone misses the 17 that say “student.” The youth pastor job pages group the variants, and the young adult pastor pages cover jobs that add college or young adult ministry.

Where are youth pastor jobs?

Youth postings come from 23 states and 43 churches. California has 6, Georgia 5, Florida 5, Texas 4, and Washington and Ohio 3 each. See the pages for Texas, California, Florida and Georgia, or browse every state.

How much does a youth pastor make in Texas?

None of the four Texas youth postings states pay. BLS puts the May 2025 median for Texas clergy at $59,480, and the national median for directors of religious activities and education at $52,100. A candidate for a Texas job can ask the church for its range at the first call.

Is there a shortage of youth pastors?

Chemistry Staffing, the firm behind the compensation report, writes, “We’ve been saying it’s a ‘candidate’s market for a few years.’ This is especially true in the youth pastor world.” That is one staffing firm’s view. Our own count is 49 open youth postings at 43 churches on October 19.

How do you get hired as a youth pastor?

Four steps match what the postings ask for.

  1. Read the full posting for the supervisor, the hours, the pay and the faith and doctrine statement before you write anything. Ask the church to explain any missing line.
  2. Gather evidence of work with students and volunteers, including numbers such as students in a group and volunteers recruited.
  3. Expect a background check. Under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act a church that uses a background check company has to give the applicant a written disclosure in a stand-alone format and get written permission first, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
  4. Prepare for the interview with the church job interview questions guide, and read the youth group games guide for the programming side of the job.

Churches hiring a youth pastor can use the church job description guide to write the posting, and can post the job free. The weekly newsletter sends new guides and job data.
