Director of Discipleship

Department: Community Life Reports To: Pastor of Community Life Status: Full Time (40 hours/week)

Classification: Salaried Compensation: $40,000 - $60,000 per year Location: Cypress Campus

THE OPPORTUNITY

Help people find community and take their next step following Jesus. As SCG’s Director of Discipleship, you’ll lead Discipleship Groups and the ministries that help people connect, be baptized, and grow into leadership. Your work will equip the people who make these next steps personal and accessible. We’re looking for a ministry leader who develops others, follows through on details, and brings a pastoral presence to everyday conversations. You’ll work with the Community Life and Care teams to strengthen the discipleship ministry and help people Live Differently together.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Oversee all Discipleship Groups and Commitment Ministries, including Newcomers, Baptism, and New Leader Development.
  • Recruit, train, support, and develop volunteer leaders and Discipleship Coaches. When a ministry lacks a volunteer leader, ensure its work continues while recruiting a replacement.
  • Build leadership for group launches, including recruiting 20 - 30 qualified leaders for the fall launch, and plan the twice-yearly discipleship celebration dinner.
  • Guide and support the volunteer team that manages the baptism program.
  • Partner with the Community Life Ministry and Care teams to use the Community Life Center as a year-round ministry resource.
  • Provide a pastoral presence in the lobby and courtyard at all weekend services, and speak or teach for Community Life and other SCG ministries as needed.
  • Participate in biweekly pastoral staff meetings and daily staff devotions, lead devotions when requested, and collaborate with staff and pastoral teams across SCG.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, unobstructed workplace and carry out related responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of experience on staff as a pastor or ministry leader. An advanced degree from an accredited seminary is preferred.
  • A practice of personal devotion and a Christ-like lifestyle and family life, a signed SCG Statement of Faith, active membership and regular attendance at SCG, and participation in an active SCG Discipleship Group.
  • A commitment to positive relationships, treating people with dignity, respect, integrity, and compassion, and protecting confidential information.
  • The ability to recruit, train, support, and lead volunteers and paid staff, delegate appropriately, and grow existing ministries.
  • The ability to turn Executive Leadership Team vision into tangible goals and lead teams toward church-wide priorities, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive, self-starting approach; the ability to work independently with little or no supervision, meet deadlines, maintain regular and timely attendance, and increase output during busy seasons.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across a diverse staff and congregation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows or Apple operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite, the web, and email.

WORK SCHEDULE

Regular office hours are Tuesday - Friday, with 1 - 2 flex days determined by evening classes and programs. The role includes weekends during services and hours as needed on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
