A church technical director runs the sound, lighting, video, streaming and presentation systems behind a service, and often manages the staff and volunteers who operate them. Of the 38 production and technical postings on Church Posting on October 19, 2026, two state pay, a technical director in Colorado at $75,000 to $90,000 and an audio, video and lighting engineer in Kansas at $57,420 to $95,700.

The figures come from 38 church postings read October 19, 2026, with production, audio, video, lighting, broadcast, streaming, filmmaking or technical director in the title, and the BLS May 2025 wage estimates. The job pages show current openings.

What should a candidate clarify about the role?

Ask which rooms, services and systems the role covers. Confirm who maintains equipment, approves replacements, trains volunteers and covers events outside the Sunday schedule. Get the supervisor’s name and the hours in writing.

How do the titles differ?

The snapshot includes technical director, production director, production manager, filmmaker, videographer and live video director titles. Read the duties for each job before assuming two titles cover the same work.

Are there part-time and on-call production jobs?

Three of the 38 listings say part time. Ask about minimum hours, on-call expectations and how the church pays for rehearsals and special services.

How much do church production jobs pay?

Two postings state pay, and BLS fills in the market.

The Colorado midpoint is $82,500, and the Kansas midpoint is $76,560. These figures describe two offers in the October 19 snapshot.

BLS publishes the same work by occupation. The table uses May 2025 national estimates for all employers, so a church competes with every venue, school and studio for these workers.

In our data, the production director and manager postings at Elevation Church, NewSpring Church and Gateway Church do not state pay.

Texas has 12 of the 38 postings. South Carolina has 5, and North Carolina and California 4 each. The 38 postings come from 15 churches in 13 states. Twelve say full time, 3 say part time and 23 do not say. None of the 47 postings in our Media and Communications category states pay, so a candidate has to ask at the first call.

What kinds of production jobs are there?

The titles fall into six groups, and one title can fit more than one group.

Video leads the list, and audio and lighting have three postings each.

What skills and gear should a candidate ask about?

Ask the church for an equipment list before an interview. Record which audio consoles, lighting systems, video switchers, networks and presentation tools you have operated. Explain the size of the team you trained and the services you ran.

The presentation and lyrics software guide covers slides, and the church live streaming setup guide covers streaming with three equipment plans.

What are the hours and physical demands?

Ask for the Sunday schedule, rehearsal hours, special events and on-call duties. Ask about lifting, ladders, training and the people who can help with equipment moves.

Hearing is part of the safety picture. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health sets its recommended exposure limit at 85 dBA averaged over an eight-hour workday, and says noise is hazardous at 85 dBA or higher. A church that asks a mixer to stand at the front of house through a long rehearsal and several services should measure the level and supply hearing protection for the crew.

Do you need a degree?

Check the education line in each posting and ask which experience the church accepts. An application should identify the systems you have run and the work you can demonstrate.

How do you prepare for a church production interview?

Prepare a short record of services, venues, equipment and teams you have supported. Explain a failure you diagnosed and the steps you took. Read the church’s statement of faith and ask how staff responsibilities fit it.

What should a candidate ask before taking the job?

These eight questions cover what a posting often leaves out.

  1. Which rooms and venues will I run, and how many services a week?
  2. Who covers Sundays when I am out?
  3. Is the job exempt or hourly, and does the pay cover special services and rehearsals?
  4. What equipment will I inherit, and what is the replacement budget?
  5. How many volunteers does the team have, and who recruits them?
  6. Who do I report to, and who reviews my work?
  7. What is the on-call expectation for events and failures?
  8. Does the church measure sound levels and supply hearing protection?

What should a church put in a technical director posting?

Only two of the 38 postings state pay. A posting that names the console, the lighting platform, the network, the software, the hours and the pay range tells a qualified candidate whether the job fits. The church job description guide has a technical director template, and a church can post the job free.

Open jobs by role are on the technical director and production pages, the church sound technician pages, the church media director pages and the church IT director pages, and by state on Texas, South Carolina and North Carolina. The weekly newsletter sends new guides and job data.
